I felt the urge to put some miles away and crossed through South Carolina with a stop in Spartanburg and later Brevard to visit family. The cool and foggy mornings of the Nantahalla brought back many memories. I took breaks at the many overlooks and found a Remington knife on a hiking trail. After an overnight in Elijay with aunts and uncles, I set off across the state on back roads of gravel and red clay. It was hunting season and the Berry College WMA I planned to camp at had signage forbidding AM visits. I scurried on over the Alabama line passing Carter's Lake and the upper headwaters of the Coosa River. I had visited Piedmont, AL on my bicycle trip and remembered a NF campsite nestled along a creek. Soybeans baked yellow in the extreme drought as I climbed from the hot valley into the cool forest. The creek was dry but the site quiet and dark - perfect for a hammock. Crunching down the gravel Red Maple Ln made me feel comforted again. It was wonderful spending 5 days back at Common Ground. I changed out my tires which had 2k miles of wear over what is usual. Call me cheap but it made it. The visit was busy and full of activities including a Tour of Solar Homes in which 5 local homes are showcased for building technique and power. Camping beneath the pines and connecting with close friends was a much welcomed break. I even caught a bass for dinner.

Mike SaundersIn May 2014 I quit my job to ride a Honda Ruckus over 69'000 mi and counting. Wild camping most nights and cooking most of my own meals, I keep the costs low and the landscape changing. Archives
