Big Four Mtn, so named for a "4" seen by an early miner on it's northern face, stands majestically 6135' , stretching over 4000' above my head. I hike through the avalanche destruction to the ice caves, remnants of last season's snowfield as the streams and summer melt into beautiful channels. Booming cracks emit from the darkness beyond, a reminder to only venture so near.

There used to be a lodge where your bike is parked. Do you know there was a railroad all along the river up to the mining town of Monte Cristo?

Yes the old Big Four Inn, which leased use of the tracks from there west to Everett to ferry well-to-do tourists. I like that they even offered an outdoor tent bunk option!

Mike SaundersIn May 2014 I quit my job to ride a Honda Ruckus over 69'000 mi and counting. Wild camping most nights and cooking most of my own meals, I keep the costs low and the landscape changing. Archives
