Heading east from Gander, the only two options are the Trans Canada Highway (100kph) or the T'Railway, an off-road vehicle rails to trails highway. The gusty crosswinds and incessant truck traffic encouraged me to seek out the adjacent course. The ruts and larger gravel made it slow going but the views and wind protection afforded by tunnels of black spruce was totally worth it. I found myself thinking about the Newfie Bullet, a notoriously slow narrow gauge diesel engine that once ran these lines. It's top speed of 30mph was still faster than my own today, and even 50 years ago was considered unbearably slow. I should rename La Tortuga "The Newfie Slingshot"...all things considered.
