Day 9: Brookville, PA to Alexandria, VA
Needless to say, I was up before the sun, packed and rolling as soon as light would allow. Saw plenty of deer!
The morning sun had much cloud and fog to burn off so it made for great pics through the morning hours.
Hey look where Hwy 36 took me!
SO MANY GROUNDHOGS here.
Had some coffee then went exploring further.
I love windmills.
Nearly as much as I love brick laid streets still in use :thumb
Classic.
Approaching Altoona, PA
This one is for SillyGoose
What I believe to be America's Oldest Operational Roller Coaster.
Just outside Roaring Springs, PA
And now inside! Claim to fame is their bottled water.
Loved the drunk paint job on this road.
They don't build em like they used to.
The fall colors were starting to transition nicely.
I've been to this covered bridge before...but from the other direction. Who knew!?
Cattle munching corn stalks.
Saw a NF road turnoff and could not resist.
I was shocked to see a paved road off to my right in the woods. Strange. I parked and hiked downhill here to what looks like an old highway!
Sure enough it was the old PA 70 - you could see the abandoned roadway on my google map.
I explored a bit...
Until my road led me to the bank of a hwy (I-70) in it's current location. The soft freshly laid and seeded mud was not easy to make a U-Turn in.
Could you write this any better?
Answer...NO!
This cow was chained up to a pole and stared me down!
My route took me over the remains of an old christian camp on a hillside but I promptly ran into "No Trespassing" signs and didn't want to offend the lord.
I did find some beautiful steer and cattle LD could describe.
Roads weren't straight.
Leaves began to fall more and more near the Potomac River but the temps rose and I removed my wool layer.
OldSkool
Wound up along the C&O Canal behind a geezer on a Concours or something. He was going the speedlimit and realllly cramping my style through the twisties but I kept my cool.
I rode familiar back roads through MD and across into Arlington and the parkway headed south. The monument photographed on day 1 still stands.
Many many miles and memories have followed me back home safely.
