2200 miles down the Mississippi R.

Storm of funk

The last few weeks have been quite trying. Other than the typical effort of constant paddling daily, some of my gear and myself is starting to fall apart! I've sewn my pants four or five times now with both knees flopping open. Who would have thought 15 year old pants exposed to two and a half months of sun would degrade? My life jacket has busted a number of seams but is holding up okay. My paddling gloves, the old bicycle gloves from my AL trip, have a scent all their own from being wet and sweaty for all this time. Naturally that transfers to my hands so they always smell funky. My hat has been sewn a few times and patched but is just barely holding on. The rope I used to secure it has begun to mildew and the smell of it lingers in my beard. Everything has been wet, mildew and funky for two weeks and I'm happy the end is near.

Tomorrow I hope to stop in St. Francisville for coffee and wifi but, more importantly, to charge my marine radio. It's good to listen in on the large tows around here and I want to be ready for the port of Baton Rouge.

Speaking of which, I'm leaning toward pulling out in New Orleans instead of down in Venice. It may not be "The Gulf" but my experiences with large commercial ports and industrialized areas has been less than enjoyable. I'm just having a hard time convincing myself that paddling along 100 miles of rock and asphalt revetment with freighters clipping past is worth it. Worth what you may ask? I'm still trying to figure that out...

I love reading these. You've had such incredible experiences since leaving your job and heading out. Both good and bad, and everything in between. Safe travels

As always, I am impressed with your life experiences and you still remain an inspiration to me. Even if you do end in New Orleans, you have made an incredible journey and clearly are taking home memories that will remain forever. I can hardly wait to see what your next journey is!

Thanks so much for the kind words Heidi. After today's padded through the Cancer Corridor, I'm settled on taking out in nola. Next up? Cross country scooter trip in the fall on a southern route over to Washington state for winter.

Ken and I talked tonight (before seeing your blog) about the big boats and water you would be encountering. Having met many sailboats that were terrified by the large tugs and conditions on the latter part of the Mississippi trip, I'm all in favor getting out while you are ahead. It's not like it's beautiful scenery at that point. Are you finding places to safely camp? Not sure it's even worth making it to New Orleans. I'd vote for St Francesville!

Howdy, Well I've made it to Baton Rouge and put up a new post of the day. I've decided to take out at the last boat ramp before New Orleans (because they don't have one). looks like 2 or 3 more days! less than 100 miles

Mike - A lot of flooding happened somewhere south of you which I'm sure you'll hear about. Please be extra careful! We want to see you back safely and get to talk to you about your travels! Buy a new life jacket and for goodness sakes get a pair of jeans before you get arrested for indecent exposure! It doesn't take much for worn out fabric to become rags!!! Love you Michael!

I know you will use your ole noggin when assessing Susan Finley's "miles to fun" ratio for yourself. However, I'd hate myself if I didn't join the chorus and say come back to us safe. Know you are loved all over this country and safe paddling! Waiting for the next time, whenever that may be, that you grace our home in sweet home Alabama. Blessings, Mike!

Mike .....
Normally I would say go for the long haul..
Paddle Paddle Paddle ....

BUT..Baton Rogue is officially a disaster area. IICR it's up to 11 dead ....
The whole area is Flooded big time . The worst ever..
Caskets are popping out of the ground..

I agree with the others

SO I say maybe it's time to wave good bye to the
Mighty Mississippi ... You have done an incredible trip !

Plus we would love to see ya on the farm.. : )
Before winter ....

Much Love and Big Hugs

T & D

Honey I am thrilled to hear your wise decision of ipulling out sooner than later. Things falling apart seem like a sign cause as things get more challenging with weather and traffic, etc you are wearing out. I wish we could have pulled off a surprise for you, but it just couldn't work. Was hoping a bunch of us could figure out how to be along the river somewhere waving as you passed by. Here's to you, amazing friend, a marvelous example of all that is good. Take care...

Following multiple cross-contitnetal journeys on two wheels, in June 2016 I will attempt to paddle the length of the Mississippi River from it's headwaters to the Gulf.
