Departing Happy Valley at 7AM, I knew I had a long ride ahead of me, 392km to be exact. The range of my scooter is around 120 mi with reserve so I carry an additional fuel can up front for long sections like this. Combined, they would not make it the whole way to the next available services in Port Hope-Simpson so I began collecting Gatorade and juice jugs on the roadside to stretch the fuel for the long stretches. The first 100 mi of road conditions were in varying states of repair on account of enormous energy projects ongoing in the region as well as road widening in preparation for paving this section in coming years. Dump trucks easily 20ft wide threw rocks up at me and sent clouds of dust to obliterate visibility. Baby heads (fist sized rocks) were randomly kicked up by graders or tracked vehicles along with marble sized gravel. 10" tires and 2" of suspension were never designed for this abuse but yet, La Tortuga powered on.

Mike SaundersIn May 2014 I quit my job to ride a Honda Ruckus over 69'000 mi and counting. Wild camping most nights and cooking most of my own meals, I keep the costs low and the landscape changing. Archives
