After a day or two of riding around the Poconos of Pennsylvania, I decided to make my way over to the Catskills of New York. The weather was beautiful and warm as I cruised up the Peekamoose Valley into the Sundown Wild Forest. This forest of turquoise swimming holes and cascading waterfalls would be my home for the next two days as thunderstorms moved in. Fortunately, I kept dry and warm while the weather rained on my parade. I lost a couple treble hooks but nothing I can't replace!

With 33'500 MI on the Ruckus, we departed from my folks place after a light breakfast. The spring air was warming quickly as I cruised along the Potomac River and up Rock Creek Park into DC. Runners and cyclists were out exercising in the morning air under the cacophony of fledgeling birds above. After a few hours of rural riding, I found myself crossing into PA. It was a comfortable afternoon of backrooms up to Harrisburg and eventually across the Susquehanna River to follow Powell's Valley into the hills. I found a place to sleep off some PowerLine outside Nesquehoning PA near a recreational lake. The roar of boat engines and shrieks of playing children faded into the mountain night to be taken over by the clank of bottles and loudness of drunken adults.
It was no surprise that by 5am, it was still in the woods save for one restless scooter. On to the Catskills! After over a month of time spent in northern Virginia repairing gear, visiting friends and rebuilding engines, it has finally come time to scoot. I've had a wonderful stay with family and friends but the oncoming summer weather and zeal for adventure continues to carry me forward (slowly). There have been many learning opportunities in the past year on the Ruckus and I'm looking forward to another season of riding and exploration on the cheap.
My upcoming route will find me traveling through MD, PA and NY over to VT, NH and ME. From here I will ride north to the Trans Labrador Hwy to see how much of it is paved then hop the ferry to Newfoundland for some epic scenery and amazing individuals. Nova Scotia will round out my early fall before heading back south to the states. On this portion of my trip, I've left the D200 DSLR at home in exchange for a GoPro Hero 4 Silver for action shots, video and some night shots that I have yet to experiment with. Stay tuned for some interesting perspective and a fresh breath into this crusty scooter odyssey. See ya'll soon! -Mike I've had a number of folks email me asking about what kind of gear I'm carrying on my travels. I unpacked all my bags and laid everything out on cardboard to protect the carpet from many miles of dust, sand and soot. This photo represents the content of my "homegoods", the personal-use everyday items. Most of the gear pictured gets used at least once a week and I can tell you exactly where it is in the bag at any moment.

Mike SaundersIn May 2014 I quit my job to ride a Honda Ruckus over 69'000 mi and counting. Wild camping most nights and cooking most of my own meals, I keep the costs low and the landscape changing. Archives
